How to Rank in Google's Map Pack in 90 Days

It's simple to rank your business in Google's top 3.

Simple. But not easy.

I say simple because you really only need to line up three things. I say not easy because lining them up, and keeping them lined up, is a whole lot of work.

Here is the entire game:

  1. A complete Google Business Profile.
  2. A website that shows your Name, Address and Phone number and proves you are a local expert.
  3. Citations (other websites mentioning you) with the exact same details as your website and your profile.

Get those three congruent, and keep them congruent, and you will rank on the first page in 99% of places and industries on earth.

Let me walk you through how we actually do it, the same process we use to get local businesses into the Map Pack top 3 inside 90 days.

Start by finding out where you actually stand

Before we touch anything, we benchmark.

We run a heatmap of your main keyword across your service area, so we can see exactly where you show up on the map, and where you don't. Then we look at the businesses beating you: how many reviews they have, how many photos, how complete their profiles are.

This tells us two things. How far you have to go. And whether it is an easy win or a grind.

Most of the time it is easier than people expect, because your competitors are lazy. They set up a profile once, years ago, and never touched it again. That is your opening.

Pillar 1: Your Google Business Profile

Your profile is the single biggest lever in the Map Pack. So we get it as complete as Google will allow. That little "your profile is X% complete" prompt? We want it done.

Two things most people get wrong here:

Categories

This is one of the most misunderstood ranking factors on the planet. People stuff in every category they can think of, and it quietly wrecks their relevance. We usually keep it to one main category and, at most, a couple of genuinely relevant sub-categories. If you look at the businesses ranking top 3 in your area, most of them have one or two. Not eight.

Services

This is where almost everyone leaves money on the table. Google lets you list up to 99 services. Most businesses list three. We add a proper list of everything you actually do, and write a short description for your most important ones.

It is tedious. It takes a while. That is exactly why it works, because nobody else can be bothered.

Then we fill in the rest: hours, attributes, bookings, a healthy set of photos. All the boring boxes that add up to a profile Google trusts.

Pillar 2: Your website has to back it up

Your website and your profile are being checked against each other. If they disagree, you look untrustworthy. So they have to sing from the same sheet.

NAP consistency

Your Name, Address and Phone number need to appear on your site (homepage and footer) and match your profile exactly. Character for character. "Street" versus "St" actually matters. It sounds pedantic. It is also free, and most sites get it wrong.

Tell Google what you do and where

Your page title and main heading should make it obvious at a glance: your main service, plus your city. You would be amazed how many local businesses have a homepage that technically says nothing about what they do or where they do it.

Prove you are a local expert

This is the part that separates top 3 from stuck-on-page-2. It is not enough to say you are a plumber in Nairobi. You have to demonstrate it. That means real, genuinely useful content covering the services you offer and the areas you serve, structured so Google can see the full picture of what you do and where you do it.

A few technical touches help too, like local business schema and an embedded map. Small things that quietly stack up.

Pillar 3: Citations, and getting the right ones

A citation is just another website mentioning your business by name, address and phone number. Google reads them as trust signals, other reputable sites confirming you are who you say you are, where you say you are.

Two rules:

  • The details have to be consistent with your site and profile. Same NAP, everywhere.
  • The right citations matter far more than a hundred random ones.

So we start with the foundations, the big directories every legitimate business should be listed on. Then we get a little clever. Search your main keyword and look at which directories are already ranking on page one. Google is literally telling you which sites it trusts for that search. Get listed on those.

Almost no one does this. Which means, a lot of the time, you win by default.

The part almost everyone skips

Rankings are earned over weeks, and kept with consistency.

Here is the catch nobody likes. None of this is a one-time job.

While everything above is being built, two things have to keep happening in the background: a steady stream of fresh reviews, and regular activity on the profile, new photos, updates, signs of life.

And it all has to stay aligned. The moment your details drift, or your profile goes quiet, or a competitor finally wakes up, you can slip. Ranking is not "set and forget."

That is really why it takes around 90 days. Not because any single step is hard, but because there is a lot to align, correct, build, and then maintain, all at the same time.

One rule we never break

We do all of this white hat. By Google's rules.

There are people out there blasting fake listings and spam, and yes, it can work, right up until the profile gets banned. We are not in the business of getting our clients wiped off the map. Slower and safe beats fast and gone.

So, is it simple?

When you boil it right down: yes.

Complete your profile. Make your website agree with it and prove your local expertise. Get consistent, relevant citations. Then keep the whole thing aligned.

Simple.

Just not easy. Because it is a lot of work, done in the right order, kept up over time.
